Rather than simply repress the long out-of-print self-titled album, they wanted to revisit the material and present it in a way the band believes it was meant to be. With Billy Anderson at the helm once more, these songs breathe new life into the original material just as they had when they were written. Many thanks to their friends who made this record such a meaningful origin in so many ways.

Released in 2001, “An Underlying Frequency” is the first full length LP by Portland, Oregons, Remains of the day. One of a handful of noteworthy bands that inspired a wave of melodic, emotive crust in the early 2000’s along with the likes of Tragedy and early From Ashes Rise. They emerged from late 90’s crust, metallic hardcore and anarcho punk, perhaps taking influence from such bands as HIS HERO IS GONE, AMEBIX, and early NEUROSIS; and yet they created something quite unique. Their crushing, chaotic d beat crust is interspersed with moments of profound melody and silence, and an evocative sense of ennui, adding to this desolation with the presence of violin with wonderful melancholy effect. Despite these fleeting moments of beauty and grandeur ’An Underlying Frequency” never stops being punk.

Released in 2003, Remains Of The Day followed up “An Underlying Frequency” with ‘Hanging on Rebellion.” Where their previous effort was despairing landscapes of dereliction, interspersed with moments of hope, ‘Hanging on Rebellion” focuses on that desperate, frantic hope; the melody is heightened, the pace is quickened, the violin ever present yet out of reach in waves of heavy reverb over far more melodic post punk inspired guitars, howling screams and low growls and the very prominent pummelling d beat. It is this juxtaposition of almost etherial and intricately delicate melodies and the underlying crushing crust hardcore that is so evocative. Remains of the day perfectly captured the sound of an abandoned world of forgotten things; of expanses of pylons and withered trees, of cities lost to nature. Together with the likes of His Hero Is Gone. Madame Germen, Ekkaia and Tragedy, they would inspire a decade of epic, emotive crust.

They began their post civilisation odyssey in 2016’s “Covenant of Teeth” the somber string laden D beat, seated in the forests and ice scapes of future primitive cultures. “Fallow” picks up where their debut ended; following the same protagonists as they leave the safety of the forests in search of knowledge amongst the sweltering, vibrant and violent carcass cities in the desert south. It is a far more raucous record; a pandemonium of drums and throaty cello as our characters face a chaotic, terrifying and majestic landscape, one of bared teeth amongst the sand storms and screaming voices. Fallow features guest vocals from members of Gattaca, Monachus, Autarch, Wildspeaker, Hyena, Sol and Fall of Efrafa.

O A K E N Formed from hungarian screamo/crust/hardcore bands in 2012 for the purpose to use a slightly different songwriting approach concerning orchestration and length. Oaken presents savage overpowering drift with grim, atmospheric sound adding instruments uncommon in dark hardcore music like percussions and synthesiser. Slow passages blow up into the mixture of crushing hardcore riffs and monumental, eerie melodies backed by wide range of vocals with fierce lows.

Puh!

All LPs in 180gram, inlay, heavy gatefold cover, Art by Alex CF DEZAFRA RIDGE from Leipzig/Germany are a newer Band but their brand of super heavy doom is just brilliant. awesome melodies, great deep guitars and the singer, all this is just a perfect mix!!!! on eof the best bands right now in fucking Germany!!! RITUALS from Phoenix, AZ play a blend of slow, heavy, and pummeling riffs with a mixture of sonically versed melancholy melodies. This music comes from the stomach. There are 5 tracks on this release. As you listen, set aside expectation. Put away your thoughts about what you think the work should or does sound like. It is not about the definitive. It is the execution. The temporal and the fleeting. You need to understand: This is the moment, captured. Emotion plus volume. This record is more concerned with texture, using a sense of sparse minimalism and repetition to achieve gradual, swelling impact. Tracks frequently stretch out to 7 min., taking their time to unfold and develop into epic soundscapes. The distorted guitars are augmented thundering drums as the harsh vocals paint images of nomadic cultures and cracked earth under a burning sky. In other words, can be a classic. Fans of brilliant, emotive, progressive music (hardcore, metal or otherwise) must have this one. This LP comes in 180 gram vinyl and heavy gatefoldcover. Art By ALEX CF (Fall Of Efrafa, Light Bearer, Momentum...)
180 Gram half black - half white Vinyl. Up and coming German crust act Downfall of Gaia traverse more harrowing emotion than many bands do in their entire discographies. Both intensely atmospheric and relentlessly hard-hitting, the band takes hardcore fundamentals and pushes them to emotional extremes, flickering between fragility and ferocity. Somewhere between MADAME GERMEN, EKKAIA, ALPINIST and FALL OF EFRAFA! Awesome!!!
180 Gram Transparent Green Vinyl. DOWNFALL OF GAIA from Germany and IN THE HEARTS OF EMPERORS from Sweden share this split together and there wouldn’t be a better fitting combination to do this. Both bands play this dark crust, doom, punk style. DOWNFALL OF GAIA contribute two (more one long) song to this split. It starts very slow, like you already heard it on some of their last songs on 'epos'. It grows and grows over a few minutes until it breaks out. Epic, atmospheric parts meet blast. To compare it to other bands you can say ALPINIST meets FALL OF EFRAFA here. IN THE HEARTS OF EMPERORS are the counterpart to DOG. I really could copy and paste what I wrote before. Three dark, downtuned songs array to one long song here. Dark and angry vocals meet hard guitar lines. Reminds me very much to AMENRA. The LP comes in a heavy gatefoldcover and A2 Poster

I came across Alaskan because of their affiliation with other Ottawa post metal / sludge bands. Let’s face it: many similar bands have arisen on the Ottawa metal scene in the last few years: Buried Inside, Goetia, Biipiigwan, Collider, etc. Not so far away, whether you are in Montreal or in Toronto, dozens of other bands can be added to that list. The genre established by AmenRa, Fall Of Efrafa, Neurosis, Isis or Cult of Luna is now a saturated market, but I think Alaskan stands on top of the most recent bands food chain. The quality of their music and their dedication help the guys from Alaskan stand out of the crowd. They are in a kind of Cult of Luna-esque dark mood, with almost simple guitar chords that create this loud wall of sound you expect from such a band. Alaskan went epic on most of their songs: they added atmospheric passages and intro, in proportions that help blending the songs together and bringing the listener throughout their livesets without any difficulty. For any three-piece band, there’s always a challenge about song structure, because of the absence of a lead guitar or additional instruments. Alaskan masters perfectly this, and while you can hear perfectly every instrument on the album, you don’t have the impression that something is missing. “Noises” were added here and there in the background, and this aspect of the production makes me want to go back to the album from time to time just for its “layers” quality. Another thing that I mentioned previously is the musician’s dedication to their band. They are serious in their approach, and have one new release every year. Moreover, they have followed the steps of fellows Buried Inside and toured intensively abroad. Live, Alaskan delivers a solid performance and the live set lives to its promises. While I agree that Alaskan might not be 100% original, I didn’t expect an experimental band either. The band knows how to compose songs that “feels” dark and heavy, and they can easily compare with other bands like Amen Ra. So listen to your friend: Alaskan is without a doubt worth to check out.

fInally a new full length by this swedish slow dark crust heroes! Monumental crust from Sweden with a very unique style that blends elements of crust, metal and somewhat ambient, eerie and tribal sounding music together. You can hear some influences from other bands such as Amebix, Dystopia and Neurosis in parts, but Counterblast's is something truly unique that must be experienced to understand how amazing this is.

In the years that followed, brothers Erik and Oskar Karlsson and Martin Bengtsson took the spirit of their former band and worked at creating a larger, more ominous and ultimately more considered sound, with their new drummer David Flood. This band would become MONACHUS. capturing an organic timbre that invokes images of these swedes toiling over beloved instruments, their debut album OUT OF THE BLUE draws influence from brooding sludge metal, yet invokes a sense of timeless peace, surging waves of sung and groaled voices, raucous walls of guitars and emotive poise.

The main influence on this album was to go back to where Saviours started – Sabbath, Maiden, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy… The whole record is a trek through Earth’s demise which everyone contributes to, oblivious or not. It’s a procession toward death. The world has gone insane. Humans have become apathetic, greedy, self-centered, over-medicated, delusional parasites in a filthy, drained and deflated world. It’s hopeless now, too far gone. Now we wait. That’s what this record is about. Earth’s possession and death’s procession.
