NORTHLESS Since I've been running this label there's been very few times in my life that I've been witness to such a crushing sludge metal band. Northless blew my mind the first time I listend them as a four-piece. With this Split the band's intensity is captured on record, at long last. Since adding two additional members to the lineup (the band started as guitar/drum duo) Northless has expanded on their original style of atmospheric sludgy metal and gone beyond the barrier that holds lesser bands back. This progression enabled Northless to break through into new territory and write truly exceptional songs, more focused, more dense. This Split might be one of the most misanthropic, angst-filled albums I've ever heard, but it never fails to instill a feeling of hope in the listener. A hope that a band can draw upon familiar influences and personal experiences, draw on them and combine them to create something that breaks the mold of slow & heavy music.

This band is amazing and this first full-legnth of theirs is relentless, unhinged, chaotic crust! Somewhat in the vein of His Hero is Gone, Tragedy and From Ashes Rise, but with a very distinct and brutal edge, Masakari fuses their apocalyptic crust with the raging power of Discharge/Disfear D-beat and the hard-edged Japanese punk stylings of G.I.S.M., with a smattering of blast-beat driven grindcore to drive it all home. After the huge underground buzz of their debut 7", the band was ready to take their cataclysmic protest punk to a whole different level and "The Prophet Feeds" is that next step. Die kurze Demo-CD vor ein paar Monaten war schon richtig gut, aber jetzt haben die Dortmunder ihre volle Durchschlagskraft entwickelt. Harcore, Metal, Post-Rock, Sludge und eine schön kräftige Brüllstimme in einen Würfelbecher, kurz kräftig geschüttelt, wieder ausgekippt - und zack, liegt da mindestens eine große Straße, wenn nicht sogar ein Kniffel auf dem Tisch. Obwohl, so eine Spielkram-Metapher wird der Band überhaupt nicht gerecht, die geht nämlich mit sehr viel Schwermut und wenig Licht zur Sache. Die Riffs sind sicher alle nicht neu, einige haben mich sogar frappierend an Isis' Panopticon erinnert, aber es gibt bestimmt Schlimmeres. Die Platte ist brutal und brachial, allerdings auch sehr atmosphärisch - als episch würde sich dann aber angesichts der Länge von ungefähr einer halben Stunde doch nicht bezeichnen. Vielen ist das sicher zu kurz, um sich vollständig drin zu verlieren, ich weiß es zu schätzen, dass eine Band aus diesem Bereich mal keine Platte aufgenommen hat, die mich gleich eine ganze Stunde beschäftigt. Alles in allem 'n dolles Ding.

SERPENT EATER, based out of Cologne, Germany, has been plodding forward with its current lineup since early 2012. With members hailing from HAMMERHEAD (Ger), TUMULT (Ger), DASKRILL (Ger) and THROATS (UK), SERPENT EATER has been well rooted in the DIY Hardcore Punk scene for ages. Living on anger, SERPENT EATER is fueled, not dispirited, by life’s experiences and struggles. As such, the lyrical concepts employed in their work mainly focus on the weirdness and deformations of the psyche as well as the emotions of a violated mankind in modern society. SERPENT EATER creates its signature dark sound to emphasize this lyrical approach by mixing elements of death and black metal to (post) hardcore, crust, heavy and dark 70s rock, and doom to create sludgy, heavy and somber atmospheres of despair and hopelessness infused with moments of calm, sadness and melodic doldrums – only to be interrupted by sudden outbursts of sheer fury.
