MARTYRDÖD hail from Sweden and originally formed back in 2001. While keeping true to the d-beat driven “Käng” crustpunk style-origins, MARTYRDÖD have quickly managed to develop their unique sound by adding a relentless edge of metal and a pivotal touch of Nordic melodies into the mix. “Hexhammaren” is MARTYRDÖD’s seventh studio album and was once again recorded with Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Arch Enemy, In Flames) in Gothenburg, Sweden. Mayak from Bielefeld (with guys from Ruins, Ratfeast, and Souls for Sale) are back with their second long player. With their self-titled debut LP, Meraine are happy to fill the void, Akela has left. In the years that followed, brothers Erik and Oskar Karlsson and Martin Bengtsson took the spirit of their former band and worked at creating a larger, more ominous and ultimately more considered sound, with their new drummer David Flood. This band would become MONACHUS. capturing an organic timbre that invokes images of these swedes toiling over beloved instruments, their debut album OUT OF THE BLUE draws influence from brooding sludge metal, yet invokes a sense of timeless peace, surging waves of sung and groaled voices, raucous walls of guitars and emotive poise.
An all-American line up for this Split LP: Monuments Collapse are from San Francisco, Break Naofa from Seattle, and both provide epic slabs of doomed crust. The split is the shoegazeing bastard offspring of Neurosis and Fall Of Efrafa, with the influential cousin Converge adding a slight discordancy of the tunes. MC supply the heavier side with meaty, chugging riffs flowing beneath the beautifully eerie guitar tone and back of the hall vovals. Break Noafa have a more relaxed/laid back sound (expect for the last 80 seconds of their 2nd track "VIII" when it gets all chuggy). Both BN tracks are sprawling journeys that moroph from post-hardcore into dream-state crust and back again. Glorious
